Sample drawings

These are a few of my favourite drawings from a cluster of 40
drawings done in different mediums. They were drawn from
my own images taken on my trip to the Natural History museum.
The most common mediums I used were pen, pencil, acrylic
paint, chalk, charcoal, watercolours and liquid ink.

Group Installation 'Liverpool docks'

Our first group installation was inspired by our trip to the Liverpool docks. It was a drawing installation of which we used many different mediums such as acrylic paints, pencil, chalk charcoal and used cardboard and different papers to make it appear more three dimensional. I personally worked on the door, painted bricks and a broken window, focusing on a realism effect. I used shadows and highlights to create a 3-D look on a 2-D surface.
We added broken boxes, bags and litter to the installation to reflect the urban theme. Paint splatters were added on the walls for further effects.

Puppet Project 'Mythical Creatures'

Our very first project was to create a mythical creature puppet. During the summer, I visited Kenya so my inspiration was African mythology. One of the myths I came across was of the 'Tokoloshe'; a small, gremlin-like creature said to terrorise school children. I designed my own interpretation of the creature and created a plush puppet out of hand-batik cotton. I hand painted his features in acrylic and added earrings for a more tribal effect. I dyed the material with tea and coffee after passing many plantations in Kenya and also chose batik as it's a traditional Kenyan technique.

Collagraph Print 'Looking through'

I was highly interested in looking at the structure of leaves and especially studying dried leaf skeletons. I experimented using tin foil, tape and string to re-create the look of leaf skeletons, but found that using real dried leaves created a leaf skeleton print from their veins. I experimented with small leaves at first then dried large leaves from a Hoster plant. From this, my outcome was a long wall piece made up of earth colours to reflect the natural theme.

Screen printing - Indentity

My screen print theme was 'Identity' and with so many personal pictures of my friends from our trip to London, I wanted to create something special to remind me of the good time we had there. I experimented with different styles, colours and papers so did four large samples on paper as seen here.
Inverted print done on black paper in white paint.
This piece was re-created with techniques inspired by an Artist i found. He used a roller to paint his background and left crisp edges to give the entire image a new shape.
. I created a soft pillow to reflect the personal touch to the project. It represents the comfort I feel when i'm around my friends.

Life Drawing

A tonal drawing focusing only on the light on the body

Life Drawing allows me to practice and improve on my skills in proportion, line drawing and tone. As the sessions have gone on, I have found myself thriving and loving drawing the human figure. It provides more challenges every time and tests my ability to draw people. I try new techniques and mediums to see which mediums I need to practice more with and also what I am best at. The image above is a line drawing of our life model who is adopting the lying down position. This angle was tricky, but I managed to create the proportions of the body almost perfectly.
Done in soft pencil, focusing both on measurements, proportion and tone

Illuminations

I have always been fascinated by jellyfish and wanted to capture their beauty in a series of paintings. I researched more in depth and found artists such as Michelle Kurlan who captured marine life in a simple form. Finding a primary source was difficult as jellyfish are hard to photograph on a daily basis; so, I created my own jellyfish out of man-made materials such as newspaper, silk and plastic bags. I followed with a photo shoot and clever editing to make the jellys come alive. My final task was to paint from these images. Done in oil paint on board.
